DIVE INTO FRESHWATER: DISCUS

Originating from the Amazon River Basin in South America, Discus are a stunning, social, and colorful freshwater fish. We stock over 21 different tank-raised strains all from one of the largest Discus breeders in the world. With all of our discus coming from one location, you can buy with confidence knowing that our discus have not been mixed with either wild-caught and/or other tank-raised Discus which could be carrying different microbial strains. Limiting exposure can result in an overall healthier discus display. Discus should be kept in larger numbers to minimize aggression and often do well with selective tropical fish. Discus are worth the investment as they can live up to 15 years!

DIVE INTO: CARE

When it comes to these fish, tank-raised are much easier to care for than wild mainly because they are bred to tolerate a much wider range of parameters. At least a 10% water change is recommended weekly, though daily water changes have shown to decrease stunting in our experience. Stability in water chemistry is more important than targeting a specific value when considering pH, KH, and GH. As they mature, it is important to make sure that stocking levels are high enough to help prevent aggression; our breeder recommends 10 discus per 40 gallons provided adequate filtration is available. Bushynose plecostomus, rainbows, large cardinal tetras, and rams are often great tankmates.
